The actress thanks Christopher Nolan for "backing" her after internet backlash.

In 2013, Anne Hathaway named Christopher Nolan her "angel" for helping her during online backlash after her Oscar triumph.

The Devil Wears Prada actor recalled the Oppenheimer filmmaker supporting her as public opinion went against her during her Les Misérables Oscar campaign in a recent interview.

"A lot of people wouldn't give me roles because they were so concerned about how toxic my identity had become online," Hathaway said.

Nolan, who worked with Hathaway on 2012's The Dark Knight Rises, "did not care" about social media comments.

"I had an angel in Christopher Nolan, who did not care about that and gave me one of the most beautiful roles I've had in one of the best films I've been a part of," Hathaway said, referring to Interstellar's NASA scientist Dr. Amelia Brand.

Hathaway said the position saved her career after the filmmaker, who recently made waves for refusing to carry a smartphone due to distraction, offered it.

"I don't know if he knew that he was backing me at the time, but it had that effect," he remarked. "And my career did not lose momentum the way it could have if he hadn't backed me."

Hathaway, who will star alongside Nicholas Galitzine in The Idea of You, said the Internet's fury strengthened her.
