The record for the largest rainbow trout ever caught in the state of Maryland’s history has been taken by a new angler.

Antietam Creek, the location of the deadliest battle of the Civil War, was the location where the fish that weighed 17.44 pounds was caught. This fish broke the previous record for trout, which had been held for 37 years and weighed 14.2 pounds.

“We are extremely impressed by the weight of the fish, which bests the old record by over 3 pounds, a record that many of us in the department thought would never be broken,” Erik Zlokovitz, the recreational fisheries outreach coordinator for the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, said in a statement. “We are extremely impressed by the fish’s weight.” The fish, which measured nearly three feet in length, also stunned the new record-holder.

“I knew the fish was a very large trout, but I did not see how big it was at the beginning of the fight,” said Jean-Philippe Lartigue, a fisherman, in a statement when asked about the fish’s size. “I was finally able to catch a glimpse of the fish, and it made two really long runs to the opposite side of the creek, making it difficult for me to move about. It was also necessary for me to keep the fish away from certain bridge abutments, as they had the potential to severely damage the line.

According to Lartigue, the angler was unable to retrieve the fish from the river because he did not possess a net that was sufficiently large. After a period of thirty minutes, he was finally successful in capturing the creature by the jaw and snagging it with his fingers. Lartigue was left with a painful bite as a result of the trout’s retaliatory attack, which involved digging its teeth into his finger.

It is not going to be possible to place the enormous fish on the mantle because Lartigue made a meal of it.

According to the International Game Fish Association, the rainbow trout is a species that is indigenous to the West Coast of the United States, extending from Alaska to Mexico. Following its first introduction along the Atlantic coast, it was subsequently dispersed over the globe.

A rainbow trout weighing 48 pounds was captured in Lake Diefenbaker in Canada in 2009, setting a new world record for the species. The length of 37 inches, which was caught in New Zealand in the year 2020, is the world record.

All of his knowledge was passed down to him by his father. Larigue is not unfamiliar with fishing. During his career, he worked as a fisheries biologist and provided advisory services to African countries, he stated. He attributes his ability to fish for trout with long rods and natural baits to the fact that his father instructed him to do so in the home he grew up in in France.

“The long rod helps to control the drift and presentation of natural baits in swift stream currents,” the Department of Natural Resources asserted in a statement.

According to the Department of Natural Resources, the rod was 12 feet long and decorated in a crappie-style pattern. It featured a spinning reel, an 8-pound test monofilament line, a small spit shot weight, and a No. 8 hook that was baited with a worm that he dug up from his backyard.

The catch was made on a historic battlefield Antietam Creek, which is a section of the battlefield where the pivotal Battle of Antietam took place on September 17, 1862, during the American Civil War, is where the fish was caught.

According to the Encyclopedia Britannica, the North was successful in preventing the South from invading Maryland, which was considered to be one of the most significant dangers to the nation’s capital.

On the day that was the bloodiest of the Civil War, more than 22,700 people from the United States of America lost their lives.
