Because Sanremo is Sanremo!

The moment many have been waiting for all year has arrived: it is time to kick off the 74th edition of the renowned Festival di Sanremo!

The first of five nights has finally concluded, and we’ve seen all 30 acts perform their songs on stage. At the end of the night, a press, TV, and online jury ranked the top five performers. After the results were published, the top five were:

  3. Annalisa – “Sinceramente”
  4. Diodato – “Ti muovi”
  5. Mahmood – “Tuta gold””

The one and only Amadeus will host Sanremo for his fifth and possibly final year. This year, he will be accompanied by a special co-host every night. Tonight he was accompanied by Marco Mengoni, two-time Sanremo winner and Italy’s Eurovision representative in 2013 and 2023.

That is not all! Along with seeing all of the acts perform their songs, we also get to see performances by special guests chosen by the host, Amadeus.

We see co-host Marco Mengoni perform twice. First, we hear Due Vite, his Sanremo 2023 winning and 4th place Eurovision 2023 song, followed by a medley of some of his finest songs, including his 2013 Sanremo winning and 7th place Eurovision song, L’essenziale.

Night 1 also features Lazza singing his Sanremo 2023 song Cenere on the Suzuki Stage (a stage dedicated to artists that have recently performed in Sanremo) and Tedua performing one of his songs on the floating stage (a stage featuring musicians popular with the younger crowd). Both stages are located outside of the Teatro Ariston.

Night 2 will begin tomorrow, and fifteen of the acts will return to the stage to play their songs once again. After tomorrow’s performance, we will find out who placed first through fifth out of fifteen. Tomorrow night, Amadeus and Giorgia will be co-hosts.

Italy in Eurovision

Italy has competed in 48 Eurovision competitions. They’ve won three times.

  • 1964: Gigliola Cinquetti – Non Ho L’étà
  • 1990: Toto Cutugno – Insieme: 1992
  • 2021: Måneskin – Zitti e buoni

Their lowest performance occurred in 1966 when they finished last.

“Nel Blu Dipinto Di Blu,” also known as “Volare” from 1958, is Italy’s most well-known song. It is also the most popular Eurovision Song Contest song ever. Famous performers have covered the song, including Dean Martin, Cliff Richard, David Bowie, and many others.

Italy suffered a long hiatus from the Eurovision Song Contest between 1998 and 2010. Since then, Italy has been a “Big-5” country, which means it skips the Semi-final phase and advances directly to the Grand Final.
