It has been claimed that there is a possibility that veteran running back Ezekiel Elliott will return to the Dallas Cowboys, despite the fact that he is still a free agent.

On the episode of NFL Live that aired on Tuesday, Adam Schefter of ESPN noted that Elliott is not in a hurry to sign with a new team while he is hoping for a big-money contract, but that a reunion with Dallas is not completely out of the question:

“He would be warmly welcomed and embraced by the Cowboys…” The reason I believe Zeke continues to wait is to see if there is a chance that presents itself, if there is a team out there that is prepared to bring him in and pay him. His return to Dallas is always an option, so there is no need for him to rush. Therefore, I believe that he is waiting to see if something else comes to fruition, while the Dallas Cowboys would be open to bringing him back, where he would make sense in that offense.

Elliott was released by the Cowboys in March due in large part to the huge contract he had signed, as he was scheduled to count for a cap hit of $16.7 million during the current season. Through his release, Dallas was able to save $10.9 million in cap space; however, there would be a dead-money hit of $5.8 million in 2024 with his departure. In addition, throughout the offseason, the organization committed to Tony Pollard as its starting quarterback going forward by assigning him the franchise tag designation.

If Elliott were to return to the Cowboys, he would be confined to a backup role, and the majority of his carries would be on third down and in the red zone. The 27-year-old is coming off of a disappointing year in which he reached the end zone 12 times but registered career lows of 231 carries and 876 running yards. Despite this, he still managed to reach the end zone. Because of his hyperextended right knee, he was unable to participate in two more games.

Elliott is capable of being a contribution in the correct circumstances when he is in good condition. During the time that he has been available on the open market, however, other teams have not shown a significant amount of interest in him. At the end of the previous month, Kimberley A. Martin of ESPN stated that a number of general managers across the league believe that “he lost a step.”

There is a good probability that Elliott will get the opportunity to disprove his critics during the upcoming season; however, it is yet unknown what kind of uniform he will be wearing and what kind of role he will play with his particular squad.
