Elena Rybakina back at No. 3 after Brisbane triumph, top-ranked Iga Swiatek extends her lead over Aryna Sabalenka

The first week of the 2024 season is in the books, but there hasn’t been much movement in the WTA rankings this week. When it lost the crucial mixed doubles match and the United Cup as a result, Poland, under the leadership of Iga Swiatek, was just about to win the trophy.

Nonetheless, Swiatek had a successful campaign, winning all five of her singles matches. She extended her victory streak to 16 matches, which began at the China Open last year. Swiatek leads the WTA rankings leaderboard with 9880 points, giving her a comfortable lead over Aryna Sabalenka, who is placed second with 8905 points. Elena Rybakina, who advanced one rank to No. 3, outplayed the Belarussian in the Brisbane International final.

Rybakina was in top form all week, dominating her opponents to win her sixth career title. Despite a strong title defense at the ASB Classic, her ascent pushed Coco Gauff down to No. 4. The 17-year-old overcame Elina Svitolina to win her seventh career title.

Jessica Pegula, Ons Jabeur, Marketa Vondrousova, Maria Sakkari, Karolina Muchova, and Barbora Krejcikova are rated from fifth to tenth place, respectively. Qinwen Zheng, who was just outside the top 10, maintained her ascent, climbing one rank to No. 13, a new career high. Jelena Ostapenko is also still vying for a spot in the top ten.

Her quarterfinal finish in Brisbane keeps her at No. 12, but a strong showing in Adelaide might see her re-enter the region.  Bianca Andreescu has had a difficult road since her breakthrough year in 2019, when she won the US Open. She has experienced setbacks in her progress year after year.

Her rating has dropped as she continues to recuperate from a stress fracture in her back. She plummeted eight spots to No. 108 in the WTA rankings this week, dropping her out of the top 100. Andreescu hasn’t competed since losing in the first round of the 2023 Canadian Open against Camila Giorgi. She will also miss the upcoming Australian Open, although she hopes to recover in time for the Indian Wells Open or the clay swing.
