Donna Kelce thought about what made her son Jason Kelce, the center for the Philadelphia Eagles, so great before he told his teammates he was quitting sports. She didn’t talk about how likely he is to be in the Hall of Fame. Instead, she talked about how much his team’s city loves him. “It’s great to see how Philadelphia has welcomed him,” Donna Kelce, who is the mother of Jason and Travis Kelce, told TODAY.com before Jason announced his retirement.
“Jason is a special individual, where, you know, somebody telling him he can’t do it is a fire that drives him.” Jason Kelce quit football. The Philadelphia Eagles lost their playoff game to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 32-9 on January 15. According to the NFL, Jason Kelce told his friends that he was retiring. His younger brother, Travis Kelce, is still in the running for the Super Bowl. He is a tight end for the Kansas City Chiefs and is dating Taylor Swift.
As Donna Kelce thinks about her boys’ NFL careers, “I just am thrilled that both cities really feel very attached to both Jason and Travis.” “These people are so big and wonderful that they attract other great people to be around them.” It’s a lot of fun.” When Travis and Jason Kelce got into a fight… Donna Kelce says she’s just a mom, despite the news stories, recipes that go viral, and pictures with Taylor Swift.
The woman who goes by the name “Mama Kelce” talked to TODAY.com about her life as the parent of two famous athletes who were “a handful” as kids. How did she get them to stop fighting and get along back then? One word: “Dad!” She tells TODAY.com, “That was it.” “Once they got to a certain size, I couldn’t do anything.”
He and his brother have “always been close,” she says. “If somebody said something bad about their brother, they would be the first to defend them,” she adds. They had a sense of “sibling rivalry” as kids, though. “There just is; you’re constantly fighting in the pecking order, and that’s just the way families are,” she adds. “I believe many people work to stop that. Some of it is good because it helps you learn how to deal with other people.
They stopped hitting each other when they were in high school. “Once they were the same height and the same weight, it was done, because it was equal, and they were going to hurt each other,” she explains. “There’s always one fight, and it’s the last one.” The Chiefs beat the Miami Dolphins 26-7 on January 13 in their first playoff game, thanks to Travis Kelce.
The Eagles were out of the playoffs the next day. Donna Kelce went to both games. Following Taylor Swift and the photographers In honor of the football playoffs, Donna Kelce is working with Heluva Good! Dips to make a big game countdown calendar with seven days of recipes, one of which is her own. She says that the food is really what makes a party great. Aside from partnerships like this one, the well-known NFL mom has also talked to fans directly. “Everybody that’s come up to me has been very gracious and supportive, and they tell me that they love my boys,” she shares. “What mom doesn’t want to hear that?” When her kids were 3, they started playing sports for the first time.
They started with soccer. She now says that she doesn’t get scared before their games. “I do it all the time. They do things like this all the time. I like it. She says, “It’s fun.” “Pretty much, there is no ritual. There isn’t much superstition in me. She does have one habit that she always does on game day. “I like to let them know that I’ll be watching and wish them good luck,” she shares. Even when she thought back to Jason’s and Travis’s first playoff games, in 2013 and 2016, she remembered being more “surprised.”
“When they were growing up, they were on teams in high school that weren’t winning teams, so it was very exciting,” she shares. In 2023, the year that began with their Super Bowl runs and finished with her son Travis dating Taylor Swift, she called it a “great ride.” Donna Kelce often seems to be seen partying with famous people. For example, she and Taylor Swift went viral for rocking out to a stadium-wide swag surf at the Chiefs-Dolphins playoff game on January 13. Because Swift goes to a lot of games, the cameras are often pointed at her and, sometimes, Donna Kelce because she is close by.
“It’s kind of funny that they’re following an old lady,” she says. “But it’s obviously because of my boys and who they know, so I understand the glamour about it, but I’m just a regular mom like everybody else.”A lot of “characters” have come into her life through her boys’ famous football friends, she says. “Big personalities—very much a love of life, very animated, lots of great stories because of who they’ve met and the individuals that they’ve been around,” she explains.
“Every day, there are a huge number of stories that are either heartbreaking or just extremely funny.” “So that’s been my greatest gift—to be able to share that with them, with some of their players,” she says. She also has a friendship with other NFL moms. “They’re just wonderful people,” she says. “I know what they’ve had to go through, and there’s kind of a kinship that we have with each other if you do get to meet them.” It’s an automatic bond based on shared suffering.
“We all know how hard we were working when they were younger and trying to make ends meet because it’s expensive,” she explains. What it was like to feed the Kelce boys Donna Kelce says she has no idea how much time she has spent getting ready for or at her kids’ games. “I can’t even think about it; there were very few days that we weren’t doing something,” she shares. “So I don’t know—30 years times at least one or two hours a day.”
Donna Kelce worked as a banker while her boys were young. “I wish I could say that I was a mom that painstakingly made snacks and brought them, but I didn’t,” she shares. “I bought them all.” “They were the marshmallow treats, they were gummies, they were this, they were that—whatever I could give them a little bit more energy, and then we’d go out and eat a huge meal afterward.”
